Oman, Kuwait share spoils in acrimonious friendly. MUSCAT — There were more red cards shown than goals scored as a friendly match turned into an acrimonious battle between Oman and Kuwait at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex yesterday. In a match that saw Kuwait fight back to hold Oman to a 1-1 draw with a second-half injury time goal, Bahraini match referee Jaafar al Khabbaz was forced to flash five red cards, two in the second half and three in the dying minutes. The Omanis, who were playing their second match under Uruguayan coach Julio Cesar Ribas in preparation for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, started the match on a positive note and took the lead as early as 27th minute. Star defender Khalifa Ayil tapped the ball in after the ball was bounced off Kuwait custodian’s body following a free-kick taken from the right by Badr al Maimani. But the hero turned the villian in the second half, when Khalifa invited wrath of the referee during an aerial battle with a Kuwaiti player in the 68th minute. The visitors, who were desperately looking for the equaliser, were also reduced to ten men when Adil al Shammari got the marching orders in the 77th minute.
Now both teams started playing more aggressive soccer but also involved in more physical play. Though neither team failed to score any further goals, Kuwait managed to exert more pressure in the three minutes of injury time. And with seconds left for the final whistle Ahmed Ajab netted the ball from an acute angle after Oman’s goalie Badr Juma fumbled while blocking a powerful shot unleashed by a Kuwaiti forward. And even as Kuwait was celebrating, a free-for-all ensued and players came to blows while bench players from both sides rushed in to add to the choas. Oman coach Ribas may not have got any positives from the emotionally charged match but he did try few players like Hamdi Hubeis who are making a comeback to the team after a long time. Oman play their first match of the third round 2010 World Cup qualifiers against Bahrain at home on February 6.
La Selección de Omán, bajo la dirección técnica de Julio Cesar Ribas, comenzó en forma positiva, su preparación para la clasificación al Mundial del 2010, con una victoria 2 a 0 sobre la selección de Singapur, el dia de hoy (domingo 27).
El amistoso se jugó en el Complejo Deportivo Sultan Qaboos, siendo la primera oportunidad para Julio, de ver al "verdadero" equipo, en un partido.
"Fue un partido muy importante".
"Tuve la oportunidad de ver a todos los jugadores importantes, en acción, y también ver, como ellos juegan juntos, como equipo", dijo Julio, después del partido.
"Nosotros pusimos a los principales jugadores del equipo, e hicimos solamente una sola sustitución, porque queria ver a los jugadores, en un verdadero encuentro",agregó Julio.
Julio Ribas, también, quedó muy satisfecho, con la actuación de los muchachos, en su primera excursión como DT.
"Como lo expresé, fué un partido muy importante, tanto, que estamos más cerca de la clasificación a la Copa del Mundo."

MUSCAT — Oman, playing under new coach Julio Cesar Ribas for the first time, made a positive start to their preparations for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers with a 2-0 victory over Singapore yesterday. The friendly match played at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex provided the newly appointed Uruguyan coach an opportunity to have a look at the ‘real’ team in a match situation for the first time. “It was a very important match. It gave me a chance to see all the main players in action and also see how they play together as a team,” said Ribas after the match. “We fielded all the main players and made only one substitution because I wanted to see the real players in real match situation,” added the Uruguyan.
Ribas also sounded satisfied with the players performance in his first outing as coach. “As I said it was very important match as we are now closer to the World Cup qualifiers. I am happy the way the boys played today. They played better and had the proceedings under their control for most part of the match,” said Ribas adding “I am also happy for all the spectators as they are treated to a good game of soccer.” For the record, experienced striker Imaad al Hosni and midfielder Hassan Mudhaffar scored the goals for Oman in the sixth and eighth minutes respectively. Oman yesterday fielded entire first team, with the exception of Bolton Wanderers’ goalkeeper Ali al Habsi, whose place under the bar was taken by Badr Juma.
The team also tried young Mohammed Abdullah in defence alongside captain Mohammed Rabee’a and Khalifa Ayil while the midfield was ably manned by Mudhaffar, Ahmed Hadeed, Ahmed Mubarak ‘Kanu’, Fauzi Basheer and Ismal al Ajmi. Imaad had Badr al Maimani for the company in the forwardline. After dominating the first half, Oman made a few experiments in the second, during which they made the only change bringing in talented striker Hashim Saleh in place of Badr al Maimani. They tried to score from free-kicks and long rangers though with little success. But Khalifa Ayil’s trade mark bullet shots provided some entertainment for the spectators.
Besides Badr Juma, who was making a comeback into the team, the new coaching staff also called up several former internationals for the 25-member team, including Hani Dhabit, Hamdi Hubeis & Nabeel Ashoor. “It is good to have all these experienced players back in the team. We will definitely gain from their experience, especially with the World Cup qualifiers round the corner,” said captain Mohammed Rabee’a. Oman play another friendly against Kuwait on Wednesday before they start their qualifying campaign against Bahrain at home on February 6.
Oman-Singapore friendly today Date - 27 Jan 2008 The Oman senior national football team will play a friendly match against Singapore at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex today. Oman, who will be playing their first match under newly appointed coach Julio Cesar Ribas, are preparing for the 2010 World Cup qualifying matches. They are also scheduled to play another friendly against Kuwait Wednesday.
“It was a good warm-up for Oman and I am confident of building a good team,” said Ribas after the match. However, Ribas must have found out that all his star professional players were a bit rusty in their approach and might need a few more strong training sessions to get back into the rhythm.
Ribas actually played all the professionals in the match and the line-up was similar to that of Milan Macala’s famed combination in the previous two Gulf Cups.
Ribas has 25 players in the camp now and it is brimming with experience, but it has to watched how good the individuals are as age is catching up.
“We will continue to have closed camps with two sessions of workout every day and I believe that the performance in the next match against Kuwait will be even better.”
Ribas also has very little time in his hand as he needs to put a winning combination in the home World Cup qualifying match against Bahrain on February 6.
“I am happy that our players were good in all departments and will improve,” the Uruguayan added.
Going against the trend, yesterday’s friendly surprisingly attracted a good audience. May be the message of Ribas playing a full-strength team had spread rather quickly attracting a decent crowd.
“We need experienced players to form a good outfit and it is good to see players like Hani Al Dhabit and others returning. We played well yesterday, but this is the first time after a long gap we are together and I hope we will build-up well for the match against Bahrain.” However, the skipper also agreed that the match on Wednesday against Kuwait will be good test. OFA chairman Sayyid Khalid Al Busaidi was also rejoicing the win yesterday as he revealed his jubilance with a big compliment (a hug) to coach Ribas.

MUSCAT — The Oman Football Association (OFA) presented the newly appointed national team coach Julio Cesar Ribas before the media at Shangri-La’s Barr al Jissah Resort and Spa yesterday. The OFA has drawn a lot of flak from the media and football circles for appointing the Uruguayan, who had no previous coaching experience in Gulf, to the post. But yesterday after being introduced by the OFA Chairman Sayyid Khalid bin Hamed al Busaidy, Julio Ribas tried to silence all the doubters while revealing his vision for Oman football and its success.
A confident looking Julio Ribas at the outset said that he and his team are here with big plans for Oman football and with the help of all concerned are ready to put those plans into practice. “We are confident of taking Oman football to next level. We will surely work to get better results at the Gulf Cup (to be hosted in Muscat in 2009) and achieve qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa,” he said. The Uruguayan is here with a six-member team that includes Fanja Club’s former coach Omar Borras.
The OFA is said have roped in Julio Ribas following a recommendation from the Omar, who coached Fanja during its golden period under the leadership of Sayyid Khalid in 80s and 90s. The other members of Ribas team are Juan Verzeri (assistant coach), Julio Giosca and Alberto Claviso (physical trainers), Alberto Ganeglius (physio) and Hugo Quenedo (goalkeeping coach). Sayyid Khalid said “as of now OFA’s media officer Mohammed al Balushi will take up the role of the interpreter and he will be the medium of communication between the coaching staff and the players.” Director of the national teams Rasheed Jaber will take care of the liaising between the OFA and the teams. Julio Ribas’ first major test will be a World Cup qualification game against Bahrain on February 6 and his team has already started the working in right earnest with a training camp that started yesterday. Sayyid Khalid said: “The training camp will start today and it will be a closed one. It will run till February 7. The professional players who are playing abroad will join the camp on January 23.” Meanwhile, the OHA chairman also revealed that a proposed friendly against Denmark has been cancelled. “It was coach’s idea. He wanted to have more training session than playing a match against Denmark.
Now we can have 16 training sessions, eight more than we originally planned,” he said. Ribas, who has travelled to Qatar and Kuwait to see the Oman players in action, said that he asked the OFA to cancel the Denmark friendly because he wanted to reduce the burden on those professional players. However, the OFA will go ahead with a planned friendly against Singapore on January 27 though the coach also wants another friendly against Kuwait (January 30) cancelled. “We will think about the Kuwait friendly after checking the Qatar League schedule. If there are matches during that week we will decide against playing Kuwait match,” he said.

MUSCAT — Uruguayan Julio Cesar Ribas, soon after he was unveiled by the Oman Football Association yesterday at the Shangri La’s Barr Al Jissah, vowed to take Oman football to the next level and promised better results in the Gulf Cup 2009 and also hoped to steer the Sultanate into the World Cup finals in South Africa.

Omar Borrás, que es conocido por aquellas tierras, ya que fue el técnico de Club Al - Hilal de Oman, hace unos 15 años, ocupará el cargo de coordinador; en tanto Julio Gioscia, actualmente en Defensor, sería el preparador físico que forme dupla con Ribas. El debut del "Gladiador" será a fin de mes, ya que la selección tiene dos amistosos de local, el 27 y 30 de enero contra Singapur y Kuwait. Esos juegos servirán de preparación para la Eliminatoria, donde el equipo de Ribas deberá ganar un grupo bravísimo para pasar a la fase final donde se dividen en dos series, de las que surgirán los clasificados a Sudáfrica 2010.
TODO EL CUERPO TECNICO SERA URUGUAYO Julio Ribas, dirigirá a selección de Omán El ex orientador de Peñarol, Bella Vista, Sud América y Juventud entre otros, es el nuevo orientador de la Selección de Omán. Lo hará con el profesor Clavijo, Verzeri que será su ayudante, Alberto Ganeglus fisioterapeuta, y Omar Borrás como Coordinador.
El grupo que le tocó a Omán tiene en Tailandia al rival más accesible, ya que los otros dos son Bahrein y Japón. Bahrein estuvo a un paso de clasificar a Alemania'06, pero perdió el repechaje contra Trinidad Tobago; y Japón es junto a Corea del Sur las dos principales potencias asiáticas, y estuvo presente en los últimos tres Mundiales. La Eliminatoria para Omán comienza el 6 de febrero, siendo local ante Bahrein; el 26 de marzo visita a Tailandia; luego enfrenta a Japón dos veces seguidas, primero "afuera" y luego en casa; y cierra ante Tailandia de local y Bahrein de visitante.
La Liga de Omán tiene 12 clubes en la "A" (Dhofar, Al Oruba, Al Nahda, Khaboora, Al Nasr, Seeb, Al Taliya, Bahla, Omani Club, Al Wahda, Sur y Muscat) siendo Al Nasr el más destacado, pues jugó el Mundial de Clubes 2000. De los seleccionados, 12 juegan en la liga qatarí (donde dirige Fossati). El más influyente es Ali Al Habsi, mejor guardameta de las dos últimas Copas del Golfo y primer omaní que jugó en Europa, saltando en julio '05 del Lyn de Noruega nada menos que a la Premier League, al Bolton Wanderers.

En la página web de la Fifa se detalla que "hasta el momento, Omán ha fracasado en todos sus intentos por hacerse un nombre en los escenarios continentales, aunque no se puede negar que posee el talento y las dotes para derribar a los colosos asiáticos. En 2004 clasificó a la fase final de la Copa Asiática por 1ª vez con impresionantes resultados como el 3-1 a Corea. Desde entonces, ha dado un gran salto para introducirse en el grupo de los equipos de mayor progresión de la AFC. En 2007 y ya con el argentino Calderón de DT, entró en su 2ª fase final consecutiva, donde arrancó dos empates contra los grandes del grupo, Australia e Irak, pero una derrota ante el local Tailandia le impidió clasificar. El problema fundamental que arrastra es su inexperiencia y escaso contacto con el fútbol internacional, la causa principal de que conceda goles decisivos en las grandes ocasiones, como en la clasificación a Alemania '06, cuando supo mantener a raya a Japón, el campeón asiático, y conservar el 0-0 durante 90'; sin embargo, un gol de Kubo en alargue dio al traste con el estupendo trabajo realizado".

El Sultanato de Omán tiene una superficie de 212.457 km2 (82° en el mundo) y una población de 3.001.583 (130º). Su PBI de U$S 16.300 per cápita lo ubica 86° en el mundo. Se ubica al sudoeste de Asia; limita con Emiratos Árabes, Arabia y Yemen. La costa está formada por el mar Arábigo y con el golfo de Omán. Omán tiene una economía basada en la explotación de las grandes reservas de gas natural y petróleo.
Omán es el país árabe más oriental. La mayoría de los omaníes son árabes, aunque existe una minoría baluchi. El islam es la religión predominante: musulmanes ibadíes 75%, musulmanes sunitas y chiítas 12.5%, hinduismo 7.4%, cristianos 3.9%, budismo 0.5%, otros 0.5% (1993).
Julio Ribas-coached Oman- to start afresh.! MUSCAT — Oman national football team, to be coached by Uruguayan Julio Cesar Ribas, will begin a national camp from January 17, according to Oman Football Association (OFA) competitions committee head Talal Al Amri.
Speaking to the media yesterday, Talal Al Amri confirmed that the new coach will have all the players (including the professional) under his supervision as the camp progresses. This meant, Oman will feature a full strength team for the forthcoming three friendlies against Denmark, Singapore and Kuwait and also for the most important World Cup qualifier against Bahrain on February 6.
“Though the camp will begin without the professionals initially, all the players are expected to join at least by January 22,” said Talal. “The matches in Qatar and Kuwait, where our professionals are involved, will end by January 22 and they will join the camp immediately,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Kuwait national team is expected to arrive in Oman on January 21 for a conditioning camp and they will be playing friendlies against Singapore (January 24), who are also camping here, and hosts (January 30).
